Food

Like many thinking human beings living in the world today, Ross and I have become increasingly concerned about where our food comes from and the environmental and economic costs (both hidden and obvious) of producing it, packaging it, and getting it to us. The more we learn, of course, the less it seems we can eat without feeling the oppressive guilt that accompanies being in America and having to feed ourselves.

So Ross, in particular, was excited when we noticed for the first time a little community garden very close to our house. We may not become vegetarian or give up corn or raise our own hens, but we figure that if nothing else we can try growing a few herbs and vegetables this spring, get our hands dirty, and spend a short time each week surrounded by beautiful things.

Yay! I think community gardens are wonderful things, and they’re perfect for people like you (and me!) who don’t really have the time or know-how to run our own sustainable garden/farm. I’m so glad you pay attention to the food you eat, and I hope we can convince our friends that it’s worth our consideration. I had my own happy shopping trip when I realized tonight that none of the food I bought at Trader Joe’s contained high fructose corn syrup, and very few items contained anything processed.

Having had a garden for about 30 years, growing just a few things is so nice on many levels. For the last few years, we have been especially into growing berries — blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, and rasberries, and as you know, giving presents of the canned results. Tomatoes have been a long time favorite and one or two plants can be very productive. Lately we have been growing peppers - hot and sweet. Tomorrow I will be making a cashew chicken dish with some hot peppers from the garden. Tonight we are using some garden tomatoes on our pizza. So, happy gardening next year.

Yes… now that I’ve mentioned it, we’ll have to do it. :-)

E., that’s great! Hard to do.
