Year-End Miscellania
Ross left on his Birthright bike trip today, his journey blessed by a light dusting of snow and a million kisses. I’m so excited for him; I know he’s wanted to do this for a long time and I love being sure that no matter where they take him or what they say to him, he’s going to think everything is absolutely wonderful. He’s good that way.
After he left I put my hair, which is reaching that unruly in-between length I hate, into two tiny pigtails and set about cleaning the house in preparation for the new year. I even washed the bathroom mat, dudes. That’s how dedicated I was to starting 2007 off dirt-free. I also entered all the birthdays I can remember (if you have even the slightest doubt that I know when you were born, please remind me. Trust me. I’m fully expecting to forget Ben’s birthday one of these years, and it’s the same day as mine) in my brand new organizer. As far as I’m concerned, what that big ball dropping in Times Square really celebrates is the annual opportunity to pretend that this is the year I am going to Get Organized (And Stay That Way, Damn It). In 2007 the product that will help me do this is a little yellow ring-bound notebook printed by a radical newspaper which is against “repression from government and the corporate industrial machine,” and for “art, humor, sex, and madness.” I’m pretty sure I can get behind that.
I have no plans to leave the house for revelry tomorrow night, so since I’ve been neglecting my camera lately, I’m trying to decide between ringing in the new year by climbing over the fence of the construction site near Kendall Square so I can take some neat pictures of the interior while all the people who work there switch their hard hats for party hats, or procuring a bottle of nice sweet Riesling or Muscat and spending the evening taking a series of arty nude self-portraits.
. . . . .
. . . I’ve just realized that the trickiest thing about being married is not the actual being married part. It is that you end up doubling the number of parents you distress when you mention that you are choosing between trespassing with the risk of concussion and taking naked pictures of yourself.*
Have a wonderful last day of 2006, lovelies! I can’t wait to hear how you celebrated. Although you might have to make sure to include a few bare nipples or fence-hoppings in order to keep up with your wildest and most radical friend.
* Hopefully at least one or two of them know me well enough by now to guess that there is a secret third option which involves changing into my pajamas at 8pm and watching Buffy episodes (possibly while wearing a party hat) until I fall asleep.

We both guessed that it would really be a Buffy night before we read the special comment. Have a wonderful New Year’s Eve!
All our love.

Aw, I love that. :-)
Happy New Year to you two too!
(Yeah, I stay up late when Ross is gone.)

You write,… “bottle of nice sweet Riesling or Muscat and spending the evening…”
Coincidentally , we have just drunk a bottle of muscat over Christmas. Only this morning I bought three more bottles. The Brown Brothers is called Moscato, which sounds so like “moquitoe”. I find it easiy to remember the name. The other bottle, also from OZ, is called “Long Flat”, a name I find appealing. The bottle says that the wine is made from Muscat of Alexandria.
So a toast to both Ross and you for tonight-whether you are in the buff or as a Buffy buff-
“May God Bless you both and may He be between you and danger in all the risky places that you may both be in.”
So, from us all, the best of everything for 2007. It starts as the tail-end of the Year of the Dog but then becomes the Year of the PIG.
Dictionary says
buff , devotee , lover , afficionado an ardent follower
The later meaning of “in the buff” meaning naked is an allusion to the colour of the skin, …

having two of the aforementioned three, i vote for a creative combination.
have a brilliant year.
looking forward to hearing from whichever of you calls first.

And, for wine lovers notes, we have started bringing in the new year with a bottle of Cab from Seven Hills. Seven Hills is both a winery and vineyard in Walla Walla, WA. It is probably hard to find outside of this area, but their grapes are widely used by other Washington wineries (always it seems, in the better examples of wine from those wineries) so keep an eye out for their being listed should you have the opportunity to buy some wine from our part of the world. Cheers to one and all.

Dad, I didn’t know that about “in the buff” but it’s a lovely connection (though my skin is really too olive to see ardency in it).
It’ll be me, AnonymousAvi, and you’d better be looking forward to it. :-) I was thinking today that I would bring you a red brick from Cambridge, but then I decided it would be too difficult to explain if they decided to inspect my bag. And the river hasn’t frozen properly yet…
David, I’m afraid for tonight it’ll be a South Australian Riesling, but I’ll keep an eye out for Walla Walla wines.

Snap! I bought a Slingshot organizer last week! I got the pocket version and will hopefully have better luck with it than last years chunky Moleskine calendar organizer thing.

No way! It’s kind of funny, don’t you think? Mine has all kinds of “useful information” in the back like “NEVER TALK TO THE POLICE.” And then there’s the lovely “Femstrual Calendar” (actually quite helpful, but what a name) in the front. :-) What color is yours?

Forest green with silver ink. I bought it at an anarchisty bookshop in Olympia. Need to sit down and commune with it. Ahh.

I celebrated with a trip down to Johor. We counted down with a terrible, extremely ah-beng Singaporean variety show. I ate more food than I can remember and drank more than I can forget. We laughed and ran around the grass and made fun of each other. It was a great New Year :)
Happy New Year to the two of ya.
